Whakaari A multimedia work by Kent Macpherson, Mark Purdom and Paul Nelson.
Whakaari (White Island) is New Zealand’s foremost active volcano. The name Whakaari roughly translates as “to display” which the island does constantly. The island itself appears strangely peaceful, yet in close proximity, the geology and the geophony present an entirely more violent agenda.
In December 2017, the three artists chartered a helicopter to the island at dawn to capture a documentary of sorts. Not a tourist centred approach but more a ‘detail’. An homage to the significance of the islands sheer majesty.
The artists seek to recontextualise the island by focusing their lenses and microphones on the hidden contrasting elements. A closeup of microcosms and microclimates.
